The Sanur Village Festival 2009- Kites
The marine themed Sanur Village Festival 2009-Bali got under way with great aplomb and festivity in August 12th 2009. The build up to the event was marketed in a big way and naturally drew large crowds of people from various parts of the world. The sight to behold however (and certainly couldn't be missed by the naked eye) was the international kite festival featuring kites in relation to the theme of the event. As I walked down the beach, a vast array of colours hovering in the blue sky caught my attention. What I saw certainly was breathtaking. Massive kites of different colours swayed to the breeze above the sandy beaches.
This part of the festival which was based on the designs and shapes was contested by participants from 12 different countries that included Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, Italy, China. I stared in wonder as these humongous shapes hovered above me, giving me protection from the sun at times. I had only heard about the international kite festival but seeing it was totally breathtaking. It seemed creatures from the sea had changed habitat and had taken to a different kind of blue(sky).Turtles, jelly fish, octopus, fish, sea snakes were all part of the sights that met the eye. Apart from these, cows, bears and different designs of kites were also launched which added to the beauty and colour of the event. The colours resembled prisms and mini rainbows in the air.
It was unbelievable to see the amount of effort that had gone into the making of these giant air borne creatures that just commanded awe and respect. These kites are so big and strong in the wind which makes me remember a particular incident. A group of five kids were trying to hold on to the rope of a huge kite but the kite with the wind, just dragged all of them a few metres before they were helped by adults and tied the rope to an SUV.
It really was a sight to behold and an experience to treasure.I'm just glad I wasn't one of the judges at this event for I surely would have been at a loss in handing out positions. People who are in Bali during this time should and must make their way down to this event as it truly is a lifetime experience and I'm sure they will not be disappointed but will leave with lasting images and memories.
